1838 Capped Bust Half Dollar. Reeded Edge. HALF DOL. GR-8. Rarity-2.

1838 Capped Bust Half Dollar. Reeded Edge. HALF DOL. GR-8. Rarity-2. AU-58 (NGC). Bright and brilliant with pleasing luster, this GR-8 is easily identified by the obverse die crack connecting the end of the bust with stars 1 through 6. Graham notes that GR-8 usually displays weak obverse stars, as seen here, though the central devices are boldly struck. Graham also notes that the variety often exhibits planchet roller streaking; the present specimen is free from such marks, and its smooth surfaces contribute to excellent eye appeal overall. Jim Koenings Commentary: This die marriage has always confused me, as for the longest time the best specimen I could find was VF-30, this despite the fact that my Koenings' Newsletter #64 (12-15-24) rated the die marriage R-2 (more than 1,000 known). Provenance: From the Jim Koenings Collection. PCGS# 6177. NGC ID: 24G5. Click here for certification details from NGC.
