1837 Capped Bust Half Dollar. Reeded Edge. 50 CENTS. GR-20. Rarity-3. AU-53 (PCGS). Nearly fully brilliant surfaces retain original luster in the protected areas around the obverse stars and reverse legends. The obverse is boldly struck, and the peripheral stars show nearly all centrils. A dot above star 12 behind Liberty's head, a die line in the curls above Liberty's clasp, and the recut 7 in the date all confirm the obverse die. The reverse is less readily identified, but GR-20 can be easily differentiated from GR-21, which shares this obverse die but employs a reverse with a large lump in the field below the O of OF. The reverse die is more fatigued here than on GR-19, with weak or entirely absent dentils and letters drawn toward the edges. Jim Koenings Commentary: I rated this die marriage R-4 on 12-15-24. It uses the same reverse as 1837 GR-19. In 2012, Graham reported nine specimens grading MS-62 or finer. This variety may be difficult to find in lower grades.
