1829 Matron Head Cent. N-6. Rarity-7- as an Unbronzed Proof. Large

Proof 1829 Large Cent Rarity Newcomb-6 Without Bronzed Finish 1829 Matron Head Cent. N-6. Rarity-7- as an Unbronzed Proof. Large Letters. Proof-64 BN (NGC). Noyes Die State A/A. Deep olive and warmer autumn-orange patina is mottled over both sides of this handsomely original piece. Direct lightly calls forth hints of original pinkish-red mint color that are most pronounced in the protected areas around many of the design elements on the reverse. A trivial spot is noted at the bridge of Liberty's nose, just a little ways above the tip. There are few identifiers beyond this, other than what is seen in the distinctive toning pattern. A well made cent, sharply struck in most areas, but a tad at the stars along the upper obverse border and within the wreath at lower right. The former is the same softness seen on the uppermost stars on other Proofs of this die pairing. Nicely aligned on the planchet, with even dentils that are well defined all around. Soft reflectivity in the fields, while the devices are frosty and lustrous. PCGS estimates that just 10 or so examples of the Bronzed Proof 1829 cents are known. Denis Loring's list of known Proof examples for the date includes about seven different coins without the bronzed finish, with several old appearances that have yet to be attached to known coins and may or may not be in addition. The number of references suggests that the unbronzed coins are more common, but the appearances in the market suggest otherwise, as does the PCGS population data. Our expectation is that further research will prove both finishes to be about equal in rarity, but perhaps favoring the finish offered here. This is our first offering for a Proof 1829 cent since our March-April 2017 Pogue V sale, which included a bronzed specimen, and our first offering for an unbronzed example since our July 2015 sale of the Twin Leaf coin in PCGS Proof-64 BN. Provenance: From the Alan J. Harlan Collection. Earlier from Heritage's CSNS Signature Auction of April 2011, lot 5022. PCGS# 407648. NGC ID: 272C. Click here for certification details from NGC.
