The New Testament – 1914 – Statenvertaling – Larning binding – 18 karat gold clasp Beautiful and luxurious edition of the New Testament, published in 1914 by A. van Rossum Jr. en Zoon in Amsterdam. The full title reads: The New Testament, or all the books of the New Covenant of our Lord Jesus Christ. This is the Statenvertaling, according to the decision of the National Synod held at Dordrecht in the years 1618 and 1619. The book is produced with a dark leather binding and gilded edges. Particularly striking is the wide, richly decorated gold clasp. It is adorned with floral motifs, volutes and small rosettes, with a central flower-shaped ornament. The clasp bears the Dutch gold hallmark with a running lion, sword, and the number 3. This hallmark denotes third-grade gold: 750/1000, i.e. 18 carat gold. The Dutch hallmark also suits the dating of the book. In addition, the clasp bears smaller stamps/marks, including presumably a master or responsibility mark. An attractive collector’s item due to the combination of the more than 110-year-old Bible edition, the well-crafted leather binding, gilded edges, and especially the richly decorated 18-carat gold book clasp.
