1788 New Jersey Copper. Maris 77-dd (DS3), i.e. 78-dd, W-5535. Rarity-2.

1788 New Jersey Copper. Maris 77-dd (DS3), i.e. 78-dd, W-5535. Rarity-2. Head Right, Running Fox Before Legend. VF-25 BN (NGC). 146.6 grains. Handsome deep olive-brown and lighter sandy-gold patina blends nicely on surfaces that show a hint of granularity under magnification, but present as smooth enough in-hand given a lack of all but a few minor marks. The most readily evident "marks" are actually a few tiny planchet pits over and before the horse head on the obverse that are native to the planchet. That side of the coin is well centered, reverse a bit off center to 9 o'clock with the letters E PLU close to or fading into the border. Additional peripheral softness in areas on the obverse is due to the confluence of die state and wear, but most major features on both sides are suitably bold given these considerations, and the diagnostics of the 78-dd attribution are fully appreciable. Impressive numismatic provenance! Provenance: From the John Bolger Collection. Earlier ex "Colonel" E.H.R. Green; Green estate; partnership of Eric P. Newman and Burdette G. Johnson, doing business as St. Louis Stamp & Coin Co.; Eric P. Newman, acquired for $5.00; Eric P. Newman Numismatic Education Society; Heritage's sale of the Eric P. Newman Collection, Part IV, May 2014, lot 30232. PCGS# 766251. BASE PCGS# 524. NGC ID: AUKF. Click here for certification details from NGC.
