1788 Connecticut Copper. Miller 16.1-D, W-4595. Rarity-3. Draped Bust

1788 Connecticut Copper. Miller 16.1-D, W-4595. Rarity-3. Draped Bust Left. AU-55 (PCGS). 120.3 grains. This piece is a bit lightly struck at central obverse, where some natural planchet roughness is retained, a bit of similar roughness here and there at central reverse. Shallow curved clip centered on 8:30 on the obverse, although it does not involve the peripheral lettering. Otherwise sharply struck from an intermediate reverse die state with several long thin breaks on that side, a pair of them flaking the seated figure's foot. Handsome medium olive-brown patina overall, the obverse a tad granular, reverse smoother with a satiny texture and nice gloss. Provenance: From the John Bolger Collection. Earlier ex our (Stack's) sale of the Estate of Herbert M. Oechsner, September 1988, lot 1206; Anthony Terranova, August 2003. PCGS# 409. NGC ID: 2B3D. Click here for certification details from PCGS.
