1787 New Jersey Copper. Maris 43-d, W-5225. Rarity-1. No Sprig Above

1787 New Jersey Copper. Maris 43-d, W-5225. Rarity-1. No Sprig Above Plow, Bulbous Nose. AU-53 (PCGS). 149.1 grains. The obverse and reverse are attractive autumn-orange and olive-brown in color. The fields are fairly smooth and hard, any porosity showing being confined principally to the lower part of the reverse. Very acceptable central sharpness for both the grade and type, with the horse's head clear and just light softness in the center of the shield due to the die fatigue. Well centered on both sides with a full border of denticles. This piece is far finer than most certified AUs that we have offered for this Maris number, and with an impressive numismatic provenance as well, it will surely command the attention of astute bidders. Provenance: From the Emerald Coast Collection. Earlier ex Hillyer C. Ryder; F.C.C. Boyd; John J. Ford, Jr.; our (Stack's) sale of the John J. Ford, Jr. Collection, Part I, October 2003, lot 155. PCGS# 506. NGC ID: AUL8. Click here for certification details from PCGS.
