1787 Machin's Mills Halfpenny. Vlack 23-87C, W-7980. Rarity-7-. GEORGIVS III, Group III. VG Details--Environmental Damage (PCGS). 115.9 grains. An exciting rarity in the series, a muling of known dies that was discovered by Mike Ringo in 1983, first published in CNL 79 in June 1988. Today, just over a dozen pieces are known, most of which are perfectly awful to look at. Despite how they look, this is a variety of major importance to specialists. The 87C reverse had been put through the ringer at this point, and this marriage was its final use until most of BRITANNIA was ground off and it was paired with a Vermont obverse to produce 1787 Ryder-13. This had to have happened in late 1788 or even later, as this obverse is used in its earlier state with reverse 88A. While the Machin's Mills coiners were not bashful about backdating coins, striking coins dated in years that hadn't yet begun was inadvisable even then. This historical punctuation on the Machin halfpenny enterprise makes Vlack 23-87C an important swan song, a rarity all Machin's collectors desire. The present example is the third from the Richard August Collection that we have brought to market this year. It illustrates how badly fatigued the dies were when this variety was coined. Both sides are soft and mushy overall, although much of the effigy and seated figure are outlined, letters VS in GEORGIVS sharpest of those at the peripheries. Dark charcoal-copper with a splash of lighter golden-brown in the center of the reverse, a rough and granular texture further explains the PCGS qualifier. Despite its drawbacks, this more affordable example will allow one more collector to obtain and include this key Vlack number rarity in their cabinet of Machin's Mills issues. Provenance: From the Richard August Collection. PCGS# 914455. BASE PCGS# 469. NGC ID: 2B47. Click here for certification details from PCGS.
