1786 New Jersey Copper. Maris 26-S, W-4985. Rarity-5. Straight Plow

1786 New Jersey Copper. Maris 26-S, W-4985. Rarity-5. Straight Plow Beam, Blundered 6. VF Details--Environmental Damage (NGC). SHI DS1. Generally rose-brown with streaks of olive-gray on the obverse, the reverse is darker with the latter color dominant. Centering is good for both sides, obverse with more denticulation present, but the design universally bold for the grade. Overall rough in texture with some surface scale to explain the NGC qualifier. The SHI Condition Census for this die marriage makes clear that New Jersey variety enthusiasts should temper their expectations when it comes to Maris 26-S. Only the finest known, called EF-, grades better than VF. The VF coins that are on the census largely show some kind of granularity or surface issue. A search in our digital archives sorted by highest grade first reveals a parade of every sort of problem that befalls New Jerseys: corrosion and scratches and cleaning, oh my. A search for a choice Maris 26-S will end in frustration, and a quest for a pretty one could send a die hard enthusiast into the arms of Franklin halves instead. With all of this in mind, the realistic New Jersey copper specialist would be wise to give this offering the consideration it deserves. Provenance: Ex Long Island Collection. PCGS# 767887. BASE PCGS# 45423. NGC ID: AUKJ. Click here for certification details from NGC.
