1786 New Jersey Copper. Maris 14-J, W-4810. Rarity-1. Straight Plow

1786 New Jersey Copper. Maris 14-J, W-4810. Rarity-1. Straight Plow Beam, Stegosaurus Head. AU-55 (PCGS). High grade type collectors seeking a single New Jersey copper are often drawn to this distinct and readily obtainable die pairing, and when it comes to the Maris 14-J, this one is nicer than most circulated survivors. The warm medium and olive-brown surfaces are devoid of marks, spots or other distracting post-production blemishes; even a hint of microgranularity to the texture is easily overlooked as it requires magnification and intent to discern. The planchet is choice with no sizeable flaws, just a single, generally thin fissure that meanders along the lower right obverse border from the digit 6 in the date to find greatest expression at the upper right of the letter A in CÆSAREA. Upper right reverse border lightly into the tops of the letters UN in UNUM, bottom right corner of the digit 6 rests on the lower right obverse border, but in general the centering is quite good, and the strike is positively sharp with all design elements crisp in the absence of all but trivial wear. An overall impressive piece that would do equally well in a high grade type set or New Jersey collection. Provenance: From the Emerald Coast Collection. Earlier from Heritage's Long Beach Signature Auction of September 2007, lot 16. PCGS# 45423. NGC ID: AUKJ. Click here for certification details from PCGS.
