1786 Connecticut Copper. Miller 3-D.1, W-2510. Rarity-5-. Mailed Bust

1786 Connecticut Copper. Miller 3-D.1, W-2510. Rarity-5-. Mailed Bust Right, Scholar's Head. VF-20 (PCGS). 154.8 grains. A desirable example of this distinctive named variety. Deep olive-copper brown patina blankets both sides, the texture of which is universally microgranular, yet free of sizeable marks and significant flan flaws. There is a very shallow curved clip just past 6 o'clock on the obverse that requires intent to discern, some original roughness in the centers is virgin to the planchet and did not strike out. The strike is actually fairly well executed in an example of this Miller number, obverse nicely centered even though the only denticulation is at the left and right borders. Reverse impression aligned to 7 o'clock, border at lower left into the seated figure's foot and the tops of the letters IN in INDE, but offset by broader than usual denticulation at upper right, legend fully legible, date complete. The central motifs are fully outlined despite the aforementioned softness in these areas, the overall design on both sides is easy to appreciate, and there are even a few faint die finish lines discernible here and there around the peripheries, most noticeably on the reverse at the letters IB in LIB. Provenance: From the John Bolger Collection. PCGS# 328. NGC ID: 2B2E. Click here for certification details from PCGS.
