1785 Connecticut Copper. Miller 2-A.1, W-2305. Rarity-5-. Bust Right

1785 Connecticut Copper. Miller 2-A.1, W-2305. Rarity-5-. Bust Right, Roman Head. VF-30 (PCGS). This distinctive hand-cut obverse die is paired with two reverse dies, both varieties scarce and survivors always plagued by strike softness, planchet problems, surface issues, or a combination of detractions. With that said, this Miller 2-A.1 measures up nicely at the middle of the numismatic grading scale. There is some emerging detail in the centers, original planchet texture more prominent on the reverse. Impression on that side of the coin is off center to 6 o'clock, but the date is essentially complete despite the fact that the digits are resting on the lower border. The obverse is similarly aligned to 7 o'clock, both sides with broad borders in those areas that are not running off the flan. Surfaces are generally medium orange-brown, both sides peppered with numerous marks that are generally small enough to avoid detection by the unaided eye. More significant is dark, hard scale around the peripheral letters on the obverse that also engages some portions of the effigy. In general, however, this piece presents quite nicely during in-hand appreciation, and given the challenges associated with this type it will surely occupy a place of pride in the next cabinet in which it is included.
