"1781" (post-1886) General Nathaniel Greene at Eutaw Springs Medal.

"1781" (post-1886) General Nathaniel Greene at Eutaw Springs Medal. U.S. Mint Dies. Betts-597, Julian MI-10. Copper, Bronzed. MS-64 BN (NGC). 56.03 mm. One of just 40 struck from the U.S. Mint copy dies, patterned on the nearly uncollectible originals by Dupre. Exceptional orange-tan bronzed patina over smooth, reflective surfaces. The surfaces and patina of this piece are a perfect exemplar of what these should look like, a decided contrast from the peanut bronze 20th century strikings that occasionally end up misinterpreted as 19th century strikes despite looking nothing like them. Multiply struck to bring up high relief, with some doubling evident in the obverse legends. Superb aesthetic appeal, with ideal color and no issues more significant than the occasional light mark or wispy hairline. This is a great looking example of a scarce, important medal. With only 24 originals struck in 1787, and no restrikes ever made from the original dies, most collectors depend upon this issue to fill the Nathaniel Greene hole in their Comitia Americana collections. It would be difficult to replace or improve upon this one. Provenance: From the Henry Mitchell Collection. Earlier ex Presidential Coin and Antique Co., Inc., July 17, 1990; our Chicago ANA Auction of August 2013, lot 1031. Click here for certification details from NGC.
