1760 Voce Populi Halfpenny. Nelson-15, Zelinka 3-A, W-13820. Rarity-4.

1760 Voce Populi Halfpenny. Nelson-15, Zelinka 3-A, W-13820. Rarity-4. No P, Long Nose. AU-50 (PCGS). 92.3 grains. Deeply toned chestnut brown and olive-copper surfaces are lustrous, frosty, and show plenty of good gloss. Both sides are choice, smooth and essentially mark-free, and the devices reveal little in the way of actual wear. Clearly this is a coin that saw hardly any circulation, although the strike is a bit soft at the high point of the effigy on the obverse and in the center of the seated figure on the reverse, the latter area with some original planchet pitting discernible under magnification. There is no denticulation at right obverse, upper right reverse border lightly into the peripheral features, but the overall design is bold and fully appreciable. The Nelson-15 is often mistaken for the scarcer Nelson-8, with which it shares an obverse; both of Ford's Nelson-8s, for example, turned out to be Nelson-15s! The diagnostic difference is the use of a letter J for the digit 1 in the date for Nelson-15, while the Nelson-8 has a Roman numeral I for the date. This diagnostic is clearly identifiable on the present example. Provenance: From the Emerald Coast Collection. Earlier ex Parsons Collection; Col. James W. Ellsworth; John Work Garrett, to The Johns Hopkins University, by gift, 1942; our (Bowers and Ruddy's) sale of the Garrett Collection for The Johns Hopkins University, Part III, October 1980, lot 1278. PCGS# 262. NGC ID: 2AUC. Click here for certification details from PCGS.
