1750-1800 - Wine glass - Glass - Special-occasion glass

A splendid antique gilded and faceted (hexadecagonal) occasion glass from circa 1780 with typical Dutch paintings. Decorated with a gilded ship and windmill amidst scrollwork motifs. A decoration specifically made for a Dutch client. It is also known as an occasion glass or friendship glass. The scene shows a three-masted sailing ship on turbulent water, flying birds, and on the other side a quintessential Dutch windmill in a landscape. This type of glass was often given as a wedding gift, to seal a trade treaty, or to toast to the prosperity of seafaring or a safe voyage. Height approx. 18.5 cm The gilding shows signs of wear.
