1721 Guadeloupe Fortified Medal. Betts-148. Bronze. MS-64 BN (PCGS).

1721 Guadeloupe Fortified Medal. Betts-148. Bronze. MS-64 BN (PCGS). 41.5 mm. A genuinely elusive medal, far rarer than the Betts-listed Louis XIV medals that were spread far and wide when his successes were widely commemorated after his death. Nice chestnut and copper brown with hints of underlying rose and blue as well as strong frosty luster. Scattered little marks are seen, mostly in the expansive obverse field, but none are in any way distracting. The design of this medal features an interesting use of negative space, which is to say the reverse has none except in the exergue. This medal appeals to Betts and West Indies collectors, but also to collectors of maps on medals for its depiction of Guadeloupe. We sold Syd Martin's PCGS MS-63 BN for $840 in August 2023, as well as another PCGS MS-63 BN example for $720 in April 2025. This one is clearly superior to both. Provenance: Ex World Art, December 1984; Heritage's sale of the John W. Adams Collection, January 2014 FUN Signature Auction, lot 3046; Heritage's sale of the Costa Family Collection, Part III, May 2026 Certified American Tokens & Medals Showcase Auction, lot 53036.
