Provenance information: Object Registration ID: 979 The current owner (S.N.J. The previous owner, J.v.B. from ’s-Hertogenbosch, stated that the object had been in his collection since the 1990s. According to the previous owner, the object had previously been in a private collection in The Netherlands since before 1990. No further information concerning the earlier ownership history of the object was available from the previous owner. Background Information: Decorated ceramic hearth and fireplace bricks formed part of the architectural furnishing of houses during the late 16th and 17th centuries. Such bricks could be incorporated into the back or sides of a fireplace, where the fired clay provided a durable, heat-resistant surface. Relief decoration transformed an otherwise functional architectural element into a visible part of the domestic interior. The principal decoration on this example is the Christian IHS Christogram, shown in relief within a rectangular border. IHS is a long-established abbreviation of the name of Jesus, derived from the first letters of the Greek form ΙΗΣΟΥΣ (Iēsous). During the later medieval and Early Modern periods the monogram became an important and widely recognisable Christian emblem. Its appearance on domestic objects and architectural elements brought explicitly Christian imagery into the household environment. Relief-decorated bricks were produced using moulds, allowing the same religious, heraldic or ornamental design to be reproduced repeatedly before firing. Their manufacture therefore belonged to an organised ceramic industry rather than individual freehand decoration. Regional workshops supplied building materials for houses and other structures, and moulded bricks circulated with broader traditions of architectural ceramics across the Netherlands and neighbouring parts of north-westernope. The proposed dating of the late 16th to first half of the 17th century places the brick within the Early Modern period, when fireplaces were central to domestic life as sources of heat and as places for cooking. Religious motifs such as the IHS Christogram could consequently occupy a prominent position within an everyday household setting. Without a documented original architectural context, however, the precise building or location in which this brick was used cannot be established. Combining practical fireplace construction with explicitly Christian decoration, this hearth brick illustrates how religious symbolism could be integrated into the material culture of everyday life. It forms a tangible connection to the domestic interiors and religious visual culture of the late 16th and early 17th centuries."
