1652 Pine Tree Shilling. Small Planchet. Noe-17, Salmon 3-B, W-840.

Vividly Toned Noe-17 Small Planchet Pine Tree Ex Charles Bushnell, 1882 1652 Pine Tree Shilling. Small Planchet. Noe-17, Salmon 3-B, W-840. Rarity-3. AU-58 (PCGS). 70.2 grains. A well above average example of the Noe-17 dies with remarkable toning. The obverse is mauve-gray in the center while the periphery exhibits iridescent pinkish-gold undertones to steel-olive. The reverse is similar, although the underlying iridescence in gold, apricot, blue and mauve is brighter and more vivid. The fields are bright and lightly reflective, especially on the reverse, which side also retains hints of mint frost. The tree is mostly sharp, peripheral letters on obverse bold and clear, outer beaded border mostly complete. The reverse shows minor softness to the date and denomination at center, but the entire design is complete and appreciably bold, including a full outer beaded border. Certainly among the prettiest Small Planchet Pine Tree shillings of any variety that we have ever handled, and sure to sell for a nice premium to an advanced type collector or discerning Massachusetts silver enthusiast. Provenance: From the Emerald Coast Collection. Earlier ex Charles Ira Bushnell; Henry Chapman's sale of the George H. Earle Collection, June 1912, lot 1961; F.C.C. Boyd; John J. Ford, Jr.; our (Stack's) sale of the John J. Ford, Jr. Collection, Part XII, October 2005, lot 114. PCGS# 24. NGC ID: 2ARZ. Click here for certification details from PCGS.
