Those who returned home too late from the Nordic moors knew the warning of the Elders: never follow the small light that suddenly glows between the tufts of grass. The Scandinavians called it Lyktemenn, elsewhere will-o’-the-wisps – wandering flames, attributed to the souls of the unbaptized or the lost, trapped between worlds, its own dull fire as the only companion. They did not glow to warm, but to lure, deeper into peat and darkness, to where the ground had long since closed over every path. This exact image is contained within this skull. It appears raw, earthy, almost unpolished in its gloom – a dark mass that in places casts a bluish shimmer, like a distant relative of the famous Norwegian larvikite, while the red specks do not lie on the surface like paint, but burn like small, semi-transparent light sources from the depths of the rock itself. Not a cheerful fairy-tale image, but one with seriousness and gravity – the darkness from which the Brothers Grimm wove their forests, and in the middle of it the small, relentless fires that lead no one safely through. Geologically, it is garnet-amphibolite, a metamorphic rock formed under high pressure and high temperature from basaltic or gabbroic precursor rock. The dark base mass consists mainly of hornblende and actinolite, while during metamorphism garnet (almandine) forms as distinct, often rounded porphyroblasts – in the English-speaking trade, not infrequently affectionately called the "Cherry Cake Stone" due to its appearance. The main collecting region lies in southern Norway, in the same ancient Precambrian belt that also yields the and shimmering larvikite – a geological neighborhood likely explaining the occasional bluish sheen in the dark matrix, probably caused by ultra-fine intergrown feldspar or ore minerals along the cleavage. Material: Garnet-amphibolite – hornblende/actinolite matrix with almandine garnet porphyroblasts Origin: Southern Norway Dimensions: 5.1 x 3.9 x 3.3 cm Weight: 108 g Special features: Raw, dark surface texture with occasional bluish sheen and semi-transparent-looking red garnet inclusions
