MAGNA GRAECIA. SICILY, GELA. Silver Tetradrachm, circa 450-440 BC. Obv: charioteer, holding kentron and reins, driving slow quadriga right; above, Nike flying right, crowning horses with wreath; palmette with volutes in exergue. Rev: forepart of Gela as a man-headed bull; CEΛAΣ above. Good Very Fine; struck from worn obverse die, nevertheless gorgeous in hand - featuring a shimmering tone and a wonderful rendering of Gela on the reverse. The city of Gela, founded in the late 7th century BC by settlers from Rhodes and Crete, quickly grew into one of the most powerful Greek cities in Sicily. Its fertile hinterland and strategic coastal position supported both agriculture and trade, allowing it to exert influence across the island, particularly under the rule of tyrants such as Gelon, who later transferred power to Syracuse. A defining feature of its coinage is the man-headed bull, typically identified with the river-god Gelas, a local deity embodying the life-giving waters of the region. Reference: Jenkins, Gela-363 (O71/R146); BMC-40 (same dies); Jameson-584 (same dies). Weight: 17.17g. Diameter: 30mm. Die Axis: 11h. PLEASE NOTE: A 22.50% buyer's premium will be charged separately. VAT on the buyer's premium may apply in accordance with UK regulations. Payment can be made in EUR, CHF, or USD for an exchange fee. Please contact us to find out more.
