ANCIENT GREECE. MYSIA, KYZIKOS. Electrum Hekte, circa 450-330 BC. Obv: Perseus crouching right, head reverted, holding harpa and head of Medusa; tunny right below. Rev: quadripartite incuse square. About Extremely Fine; minor scuff to obverse, otherwise impressive for the type, with an eye-catching reddish tone. Ex Collection of a Mentor, Numismatica Ars Classica, Auction 132 (30/5/2022), lot 296. Perseus, the son of Zeus and Danaë, was tasked with slaying the Gorgon Medusa, a monstrous creature with snakes for hair, whose gaze could turn anyone to stone. With the help of divine gifts, including a mirrored shield from Athena, winged sandals from Hermes, and a sword from Hephaestus, Perseus was able to approach Medusa without looking directly at her, using the shield's reflection to avoid her deadly gaze and behead her while she slept.
