MAGNA GRAECIA. LUCANIA, METAPONTION. Silver Nomos, circa 340-330 BC. Obv: bearded head of Leukippos right, wearing Corinthian helmet; cross-torch to left. Rev: barley ear with leaf to right; META upward to left, |-H above leaf. Extremely Fine; cleanly struck, portrait in high relief, gorgeous old cabinet tone. Ex Émile Bourgey (17/6/1959), lot 51; Ex G. H. Chandon de Briailles Collection (1900-1954). The figure of Leukippos appears prominently on the coinage of Metapontion during the late fifth and fourth centuries BC, reflecting the city’s effort to assert a distinct civic identity within Magna Graecia. Although his precise identity is uncertain, Leukippos was regarded as a local hero, possibly connected with the foundation traditions of the city or its early settlement. On the coinage he is shown wearing a Corinthian helmet, often in a heroic or martial aspect, contrasting with the more familiar ear of barley that dominates the reverse types and symbolises the agricultural wealth of the region.
