Flowers are either day- or night-blossoming, exuding their fragrance under the sun or under the moon – but these floral earrings do not require such a decision, as they are designed in two parts. The tops can be worn on their own during the day, as a discreet flower that adorns the earlobe. When the evening arrives with its social obligations, the lady of society can hook in the pendants: at least the earrings were once designed to abide by this etiquette. What appear to be shimmering rose-cut diamonds are actually faceted rock crystals set in silver over reflective foils. The original hinged earwires and the backs of the earrings are made of gold. The hallmarking of the earrings with the papal tiara shows that the earrings were made in Rome between 1815 and 1860. The use of rock crystal also fits in with this, as diamond jewellery was much rarer and more expensive before the discovery of South African diamond deposits in 1869. However, the earrings cannot be dated much closer than the period between the 1820s and 1850s with complete certainty, as their manufacture and design remained in fashion for several decades. The beautiful pair came to us from Austria. They are supplied in the antique case shown.
