The rise of Caligula in AD 37 was closely tied to his place within the Julio-Claudian house. As the last surviving son of Germanicus and Agrippina the Elder, his authority drew heavily on the prestige of his lineage, especially in the aftermath of the difficult final years of Tiberius. Early in his reign, Caligula placed considerable emphasis on restoring the standing of his family, whose members had suffered exile, imprisonment, and death during the preceding political struggles. At the outset of his rule, he moved to rehabilitate their memory and assert his position as their legitimate successor. He arranged for the recovery of the ashes of his mother and brother and ensured their ceremonial return to Rome with full honours. This programme of commemoration extended to the coinage, where the portrait of Agrippina the Elder was prominently displayed, bringing her image back into public view and reinforcing the dynastic message of continuity and legitimacy.
