ROMAN EMPIRE. Augustus. Silver Denarius, 15 BC. Lugdunum. Obv: AVGVSTVS DIVI•F, bare head right. Rev: Apollo Citharoedus of Actium standing left, holding plectrum and lyre; IMP-X across fields, ACT in exergue. Good Very Fine; a faintly golden-hued tone, underlying lustre. Apollo Actius is honored by Augustus in this reverse type in commemoration of his victory at the Battle of Actium. An ancient temple dedicated to Apollo overlooked the site of the battle, and Augustus undertook its enlargement and renovation as an expression of gratitude. In addition, he established the Actian Games, further celebrating the triumph and reinforcing the association between Apollo, the battlefield, and his own political and religious propaganda.
