Tairona, ca. 1000 - 1500 CE. A gold avian pendant, having a prominent curved beak with a tiny suspension loop at the tip. His talons grasp a bar, top of his head is decorated with two rows of three small hoops, a wide ornament at the back of his head having two stylized semiabstract birds with braided details and tiny ball type eyes. Also having a wing type plaque from his body with a set of stylized birds on the wing tips, having tiny ball eyes, wide fan tail. Set with a modern, custom 18K. Gold pin with two suspension loops. A very nice example. XRF analysis: Gold: 13.4 K. Gold: 56.23% Silver: 9.85% Copper: 33.37% Iron: 0.55%. Provenance: Private A.R. collection, Mystic, CT. Ex. Sotheby’s Parke Bernet auction, May 12, 1979, lot 7, listed under “property of NYC. private collectors.” Also with Sotheby’s in April of 1972 in their April 8 auction of “Inventory of the Arts of the Four Quarters, LTD.”. Lot 27 of that sale. XRF tested with copy of report available. Condition: An old repair on the top corners of the head ornament. Otherwise intact.
