Todas las subastas / Etnográfica / Prehistoric Pecten Scallop Fossils in Sculptural Matrix

Western Europe, Southern France, Miocene era, ca. 23,000,000 - 5,000,000 BCE. A limestone fossil block containing three large scallop shells of the Pecten genus along with partial shell fragments preserved within the surrounding matrix. The fan-shaped shells display pronounced radial ribs and remain well defined against the stone surface, creating a striking natural composition. These scallops once lived in shallow marine waters, and their close grouping forms a natural "life assemblage," where the stone matrix captures a moment in an ancient community that likely perished together during a sudden mass mortality event. During the Miocene, tectonic activity in Europe could trigger landslides or rapid sediment deposition that quickly buried marine life on the seafloor. Such rapid burial in oxygen-poor sediment reduced decomposition and allowed the shells to remain well preserved within the limestone. Size of matrix: 12" L x 2.75" W x 14.5" H (30.5 cm x 7 cm x 36.8 cm); large shell Size: 6" L x 6" W (15.2 cm x 15.2 cm) Provenance: private Berthoud, Colorado, USA collection Condition: Stone matrix is prepared to display upright unaided. Chips and abrasions to the shells and stable pressure fissures. Overall excellent with sharp details and nice preservation.
