North America, Miocene, ca. 23,000,000 - 5,000,000 BCE. A fossilized cetacean vertebra, species indeterminate. The specimen is well-preserved and of substantial size, consistent with a large baleen or toothed whale. The vertebral centrum is broad and robustly constructed, with a clearly defined articular endplate exhibiting concentric growth patterning on the exposed face. Projecting transverse processes extend laterally from the centrum, and a remnant of the neural spine is preserved along the dorsal margin. Size: 4.8" D x 2.8" H (12.2 cm D x 7.1 cm H) Provenance: private Texas, USA Collection Condition: Stable fossil with expected surface wear, mineralization, and areas of natural porosity.
