"." Two pages (of a bifolium) in French, 8.5" x 12.5", Giza [Egypt]; June 20, 1800. Written from Giza when Malus was involved in Napoleon's Egyptian campaign (1798-1801), this is listing of expenses for work done during the month of May of the year 1800 by Napoleon's army in Giza Square. A summary of fortifications, building costs, etc. certified and signed by Malus. Total cost amounted to 30,191.Étienne-Louis Malus (1775-1812) a French officer, engineer, physicist, and mathematician. Malus was born in Paris, France. He participated in Napoleon's expedition into Egypt and was a member of the mathematics section of the Institut d'Égypte. Malus's mathematical work was almost entirely concerned with the study of light; he is known for Malus's law, giving the resultant intensity, when a polariser is placed in the path of an incident beam. Malus became a member of the Académie des Sciences in 1810. That same year the Royal Society of London awarded him the Rumford Medal.An interesting document that highlights Napoleon's building projects in Egypt during his Egyptian campaign.Condition: Usual folds; very good.HID07601242017
