1837 Martin Van Buren Presidential Medal. Julian PR-6. Copper, Bronzed. MS-63 (PCGS). 62.8 mm. Handsome bright mahogany-brown surfaces with modest semi-reflective tendencies in the fields and a hint of friction to the high points of sharply impressed devices. A few light marks in the right obverse field are noted; the thin die crack from the reverse border at 1 o'clock to the wreath is as made. This is a scarce piece, the first in a short series of Inaugural types that each used the obverse of a second size Indian Peace medal: Van Buren (1837); Tyler (1841); Polk (1845); and Taylor (1849). Only one Van Buren appears in our online archives going back to 2013. Provenance: From the Medicus Collection of Presidential Inaugural and Related Medals. Earlier from our (Bowers and Ruddy's) New York Public Library Collection sale, October 1982, lot 2626; Presidential Coin and Antique Co., Inc.'s sale of the Richard B. Dusterberg Collection, October 2000, lot 430; Early American History Auctions, Inc.'s Mail Bid Auction of May 2008, lot 578. Click here for certification details from PCGS. Image with the PCGS TrueView logo is obtained from and is subject to a license agreement with Collectors Universe, Inc. and its divisions PCGS and PSA.
