1763 Dutch Medal Commemorating the Treaty of Hubertusburg. Betts-445. Bronze. MS-63 BN (PCGS). 49.0 mm. This is the first offering for a bronze example of this type that we can recall. Our (Stack's) May 2006 Ford XIV Sale included only a silver impression; Heritage's January 2012 sale of the John W. Adams Collection brought a bronze example to market. Those are the only two privately owned specimens listed by Christopher R. McDowell in his 2025 reference Medals of the Americas: The Betts Companion (1747-1763); the only other mentioned by the author is the silver medal in the Teylers Museum. This softly lustrous example exhibits blended olive-gray and rose-brown patina on surfaces that reveal only a few trivial, easily overlooked blemishes. Sharply struck, crisp, and free of the double striking evident on the reverse of the Adams specimen. This medal, by the Amsterdam engraver John George Holtzhey, commemorates the Treaty of Hubertusburg. Signed five days after the Treaty of Paris, the Treaty of Hubertusburg of February 15, 1763, ended the Third Silesian War between Prussia, Austria, and Saxony and, thus, brought to a close to wider Seven Years' War. The North American theater of this conflict is well known as the French and Indian War, an important precursor to the American Revolutionary War. Click here for certification details from PCGS.
