The Normandy landings - 135 (pasted) photographs taken on board HMS Venus and a 10,000-word account of the 76 days Capt. Geoffrey Sanders RA spent attached to the destroyer as Bombardment Liaison Officer. Titled 'Venus - April 16th to July 1st 1944', this well-written record bears testament to the author being a journalist in civilian life. The accompanying photographs, on the other hand were almost all taken by the ship's Signals Officer, Charles Whittle. The majority (110) measure 8 x 6 cm. In addition are 25 larger sized to include official panoramic photographs of Sword Beach. The account begins with operations off Norway (in pursuit of the Tirpitz and the Fleet Air Arm's bombing of Bodo) and an inspection by Montgomery at Scapa Flow. The main body of text covers Venus' part in the D-day landings. In all 82 pages and contained in the album's pocket folder is an interesting appendix: Map used on D-day, Fighting Map D-day (D+4), Extract from Orders for D-day, Fire Plan D-day and traces, Bombardment Liaison Officer's Signal Log, two maps of the Normandy Coast (Cherbourg & Caen 1:250,000, and War Office 1943 No. 4250 1:10,000) and Capt. Sanders' 1944 pocket diary. Maj. Geoffrey Thomas St. John Sanders TD (1911-1986) was the son of the Stroud newspaper proprietor and journalist, Thomas Edward Sanders OBE JP (1879-1958), and Madeleine Green (1879-1954), daughter of Col. Edmond Robert Green JP (1845-1908). After Blundell's School he followed his father into journalism. Three months before Britain declared war on Germany in September 1939 he was commissioned at the age of 26 into the Royal Artillery as a Territorial Officer. In 1942 he married Eleanor de Zoete, the middle daughter of the cricketer, Herman de Zoete, and Dorothy Courage. After the war he resumed his career in journalism. He became the first editor of the Stroud News and Journal when the two newspapers merged in 1957. He left the TA Reserve of Officers in 1961 having exceeded the age limit. After 22 years as editor and over 50 in journalism he retired in 1979. Journalist, churchman, soldier, historian and sportsman, Geoffrey Sanders was chairman of Stroud NFU from a young age, founder and joint master of the South Cotswold Beagles and High Sheriff of Gloucestershire in 1971. Relates to lot 488 his WW2 medals, lot 488A his uncle's ribbon bar (Hugh Abbott Green MC and 1st Bar), and lot 486 his uniform badges etc.
