Stephen J. Wentworth of New Hampshire enlisted from Somersworth, New Hampshire, joining the 14th Regiment of the New Hampshire Volunteer Infantry in August of 1861, four months after the attack at Fort Sumter in Charleston, South Carolina. He was wounded on June 6, 1864, at the battle of Cold Harbor, in Mechanicsville, Virginia, and died at the Second Battle of Deep Bottom, in Henrico County, Virginia, on August 15, 1864.
